A panel of 14 jurors (including 2 alternates) was sworn in late Monday afternoon to hear the case of the State of Minnesota against Detroit Lakes School Superintendent Mark Adams.

Adams, 43, of 14140 East Fox Lake Road, was indicted by a Becker County grand jury Nov. 1 for allegedly assaulting Ogema area farmer Mark Rothschadl.

The incident occurred Sept. 9 on Rothschadl's farm in rural Ogema. Adams has been on paid leave from his position as superintendent of Detroit Lakes Public Schools pending the outcome of the trial.

Becker County Attorney Joseph Evans, who will be prosecuting the case on behalf of the state, and defense attorney Peter Wold spent nearly six hours questioning a pool of 22 people before making their final selections.

After the jurors had been sworn in, Judge Mark Hansen gave them instructions that included a ban on discussing any aspect of the case with relatives, friends, the news media, or anyone else outside the confines of the courtroom.

He then sent the jurors home with instructions to reconvene at 9 a.m. Tuesday. The trial is expected to last no more than a week.
