Karen Johnson

Former Pelican Rapids resident Karen Johnson, 66, of Detroit Lakes, died on Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at her home in Detroit Lakes.

Karen LaVonne Toftely was born the daughter of Clarence and Myrna (Schipper) Toftely on March 27, 1944, in Pelican Rapids. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Karen graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 1962. As a high school student, Karen made a personal decision for Jesus Christ. On November 18, 1961, she was united in marriage to James E. Johnson in Pelican Rapids. Karen worked at Pelican Valley Nursing Home for over 30 years as a certified nursing assistant. Jim preceded her death on May 5, 2001.

Karen helped on the family farm and enjoyed riding with Jim when he drove truck. She made many friends while working at Pelican Valley Nursing Home. She was an active member of Pelican Rapids Baptist Church, where she served on many boards, participated in circle, and was church pianist for many years. She took pleasure in serving the Lord and sharing Christ with others.

Surviving Karen are her sons:Bradley (Darice) Johnson and Keith (Tammy) Johnson, both of Fergus Falls, and Darwin (Brenda) Johnson of Fargo; three foster sons, Phuong Tran of Glyndon, Loc (Trang) Duong of Sartell and Lua (Chanh) Duong of Stockbridge, Ga.; 10 grandchildren, Jacob, Carlie, Bryanna, Travis, Vanessa, Lynnzee, Benjamin, Adam, Amber, and Aaron; six foster grandchildren, Brady, Jada, Kimberly, Kelly, Anthony, and Wendy; sister-in-law Zoila Toftely of Pelican Rapids; niece, Jessica, and nephew, Jesse; great niece, Yelena; foster daughter-in-law, Barb Bijanzadeh of Cocoa, Fla.; and special companion, John Renner of Detroit Lakes.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Clarence and Myrna; husband, Jim; brother, Jerome Toftely; foster son, Iraj Bijanzadeh; and foster granddaughter, Brittany Tran.

Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Pelican Rapids Baptist Church in Pelican Rapids. It will resume one hour prior to services at the church Wednesday.

Funeral services are set for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, at the Pelican Rapids Baptist Church, with the Rev. Louie Suter officiating. Karen's grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers, and Darwin Johnson will be the soloist. Burial will be in the Lake Lida Baptist Cemetery, Pelican Rapids.
