Kathryn M. Pettit, 98, of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, December 18, 2008 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes.

Kathryn Marie Lynch was born to Dorse and Doris (Mertens) Lynch on Feb. 20, 1910 in Staples, Minn. She attended schools in Staples and Sebeka, Minn., and later attended Moorhead State Teachers College in Moorhead.

Kathryn married Robert L. Pettit Sept. 9, 1931 in Verndale, Minn. They made their home in Detroit Lakes, and she taught in Audubon and, for 18 years, at Washington Elementary School in Detroit Lakes. She retired in 1974. Robert died later that same year.

Kathryn moved to Winchester on Washington in 2001, then to Lincoln Park and recently to Oak Crossing.

Kathryn enjoyed visiting with her former students, flowers, and mashed potatoes and gravy. She was active in Holy Rosary Church, Catholic Daughters, the "Friday Coffee Group," Retired Teachers, the garden club and the Detroit Lakes Library Club. She also cherished the years she was able to travel to California and Florida during the winter months.

Kathryn's survivors include three sons, Robert Lynn (Helene) Pettit of Perham, Richard James (Lynn) Pettit of Detroit Lakes and John Charles (Marian) Pettit of Prescott, Ariz.; one daughter, Kay Marie (Robert) LeVasseur of Duluth, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and a brother, Lynn (Marilyn) Lynch of Alexandria, Minn.

In addition to her husband, Bob, Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters.

A prayer service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, in the Living Room at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Jerry Rogers officiating. Friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m.

A Funeral Mass will be held in the spring of 2009. Interment will be in the spring at Holy Rosary Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.
