Lady Hornets advance in Section 8-2A tournament
The Frazee Lady Hornets exacted some revenge on Park Rapids Monday night in Frazee, in the play-in game for the Section 8-2A girl's basketball tournament.
Just 11 days earlier, Park Rapids had coasted to a win over Frazee, but on Monday night the Lady Hornets played solid from start to finish in claiming a 55-49 victory.
"I am so happy for our kids, as they played their hearts out tonight," head coach Dave Conzemius said. "The kids were really excited to play Park Rapids after the last time, to show them that we are much better team than what we showed that night."
The Lady Hornets (8-19 overall) came out fast behind freshmen Ashley Bachmann, who scored the first nine points to jumpstart Frazee.
"Ashley got us started on the right foot and set the tempo for the whole game with her start," Conzemius said. "Getting off to a good start was very important for our confidence."
Frazee led by as many as nine points in the first half, as Bachmann poured in 13 first-half points, but Park Rapids (4-20) whittled the lead down to three points at halftime, 28-25.
The Lady Hornets again started the second half fast, with six quick points to push the lead to nine.
From there, the two teams exchanged baskets for most of the half, as the Panthers were never able to get closer than four points.
Freshmen Alexis Tappe played the best overall game of her season, leading Frazee with 24 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals; all career highs for Tappe. Bachmann added 14 points and seven rebounds.
"Alexis showed us tonight that when she plays under control, she has the complete game," Conzemius said. "She did a good job with her shot selection and also did a good job of getting everyone involved."
With the win, the Lady Hornets advance to play at Hawley (24-0) Thursday night at 7 p.m.
Frazee played the Nuggets tough two weeks ago, before losing by 10 points.
"It will no doubt be tough on Thursday night, but our kids are really looking forward to the challenge," Conzemius added.
"The kids really felt bad that we let an opportunity to beat them slip away last time, and now we will get another shot with all the pressure on them."
