Lady Hornets are back
The Frazee girls' golf team has been resurrected for the 2011 season and will field a varsity team for the first time since 2007.
The Lady Hornets have seven girls out, with senior Briana Schepper being the only golfer with varsity experience, after playing as an eighth grader in 2007.
But even though it's the first year of varsity competition in almost four years, the Lady Hornets are not totally green to the sport.
"Most of the girls have played on the junior varsity the last few years, so they are experienced with meets," said Frazee girls' coach Dave Conzemius.
Those who will be vying for varsity playing time, along with Schepper, includes sophomore Jeni Bergstrom, freshmen Mary Tycshen, Cara Roers and Kerria Robinson, eighth grader Alexis Parsons and seventh grader Sydney Dahlgren.
"Brianna has been playing competitively since her eighth grade season, so we are hoping to see her scores drop in the 50's (in nine holes)," Conzemius said.
Bergstrom and Tycshen each have played in the offseason, while Roers and Robinson also have experience on the golf course.
"We may not be in the top half of the meets we go to, but the girls won't embarrass themselves, either," the Frazee coach said.
Gaining places and scores isn't the goal for this year, though, just keeping the numbers out and gaining more will be the primary concern of this year's Lady Hornets team.
"We don't have any expectations concerning competition, but I just want to see all these girls improve through the season and just enjoy the game," Conzemius said. "My goal is to keep the varsity team going for the future."
Frazee opens the season at Wildflower Golf Course Tuesday, April 19.
