Lady Hornets have a letdown
Heading into Tuesday night's Heart O'Lakes Conference game at Breckenridge, the Frazee Lady Hornet basketball team was riding a four-game winning streak and coming off of one of their biggest wins of the season last Friday night over Pelican Rapids.
The old proverbial letdown hit as some mental mistakes and a poor shooting night saw the Cowgirls claim a 48-46 victory.
"Breckenridge has a nice team but we really helped them tonight," head coach Dave Conzemius said. "It was probably some of our poorest offensive execution of the season and Breckenridge had something to do with that.
"But we had too many breakdowns and that is something that you simply cannot do if you expect to beat a good team on the road."
Frazee (16-4 overall, 5-3 HOL) controlled the first half despite just shooting 25.9-percent (7-for-27) thanks to some good defense and excellent rebounding with 23 first half rebounds. The Lady Hornets led at the break 22-17.
Breckenridge (10-8 overall, 4-4 HOL) took advantage in the second half as Frazee went cold from the perimeter and eventually took a six point lead at 40-34.
The Lady Hornets battled back within one at 40-39 and took the lead when Ashley Bachmann nailed a 3-pointer with just over two minutes left.
The Cowgirls eventually tied the game and took a five-point lead with free throws at 48-43.
Bachmann hit another 3-pointer to pull Frazee within two with 9.2 seconds left.
Breckenridge was fouled and missed the front of the bonus, Frazee rushed down the floor and got off a contested three-point shot by Alexis Tappe that was not close as Tappe appeared to get fouled on the play but no call was made.
"It shouldn't have come down to the end like we allowed it to," Conzemius said. "I give credit to Breckenridge as the made the big plays down the stretch to win the game and we did not. We will learn from this loss and I expect that we will bounce back in a positive manner."
Alexis Tappe led Frazee with 13 points and she also added eight rebounds and five assists. Kennady Barlund added 11 points, nine rebounds and four steals and Katie McCorquodale had 10 points.
Frazee is back in action on Friday night at Barnesville.
