Lady Hornets hit by the cold-shooting bug in loss

Email

Shooting woes hindered the Frazee Lady Hornets in their 47-31 loss to the Pelican Rapids Vikings Thursday.

The Lady Hornets played stellar defense, forcing Pelican Rapids into 27 turnovers, but struggled shooting the ball and lost to the Vikings 47-31.

"The girls played exceptionally hard all game and we really gave them trouble with our defense," head coach Dave Conzemius said. "It was just one of those nights where we got good shots at the basket, but nothing would drop."

Frazee (6-15 overall, 4-11 Heart O'Lakes Conference) didn't score in the first half until the four-minute mark.

Despite the long scoring drought, the Lady Hornets were still in the game at halftime, only trailing by 13 points at 21-8, as Pelican Rapids (13-7 overall, 8-7 HOL) committed 15 first-half turnovers.

Frazee continued to chip away at the lead in the second half, as their defense continued to cause the Vikings problems. But the lack of consisting shooting stopped the Lady Hornet comeback, as Frazee never got closer than seven points.

"We really did everything that we wanted to do tonight except put the ball in the basket," Conzemius said. "We thought that we could turn them over and create scoring chances for ourselves, and we did that. It just wasn't in the cards tonight."

The Lady Hornets were led by freshman Alexis Tappe with a game-high 13 points. Freshman Ashley Bachmann added 10 points and five rebounds, while sophomore McKinzie Tangen had a nice floor game with six points, eight rebounds and four steals.

The Vikings were led by Kendra Coleman with 12 points.

Frazee shot 19.2 percent (10-for-52), while Pelican Rapids was 41.5 percent (17-for-41).

The Vikings had 36 rebounds and 27 turnovers, while the Lady Hornets had 29 rebounds and 16 turnovers.

"We are really pleased with our defensive effort over the last month," Conzemius concluded. "Now we just need to have our offense develop a little more consistency."

Frazee will travel to Park Rapids on Thursday, with game time at 7:15.

The Lady Hornets will play their final home game Friday against Perham, and the game will also be Senior Night.

Frazee will close out the regular season on Monday at Mahnomen and Tuesday at Lake Park-Audubon.
