Lady Hornets knock off Hawley for big win; Berven scores 1,000th career point
The Frazee Lady Hornets defeated the Hawley Nuggets by the score of 55-47 on Senior Night in Frazee.
"It was a great way to honor our seniors with a huge win over a great program like Hawley with our three seniors playing huge roles in the win," said Frazee head coach Tim Swenson.
The Nuggets came into this contest with an 11-3 mark in the HOL and they took a 5-4 lead when freshman Jessy Noreen hit a three.
The Lady Hornets gained a bucket from senior Abby Berven which was followed by a free throw for the Nuggets to tie the score at six.
That is when the Lady Hornets would make the first of their two 9-0 runs in the first half.
This particular one included two pointers by Berven, Jaclyn Mickelson and Sadie Stender followed by a deep three by Berven.
The Nuggets scored the next five to get within 15-11, but the Lady Hornets would rattle off the next nine points again to take a 24-11 lead.
"The kids really came out and ran our offenses well as we forced Coach Gottenborg to use three timeouts in the first half and change is defense," Swenson added.
The teams exchanged buckets the rest of the half, as the Lady Hornets took a 32-19 lead into the locker room.
"Our defensive effort was just awesome," the Frazee coach said. "The kids played great help side and recognized the shooters really well."
To start the second half the Lady Hornets went on a 7-3 run to extend the lead to 39-22, but the Nuggets nailed three points from sophomore Allie Sannes and a free throw by Amy Stoa to get back within 12 points.
The Lady Hornets would score the next eight points to take their biggest lead of the night at 47-27.
Freshman McKinzie Tangen scored four in that run with sophomore Kristi Smith hitting a big jumper also.
The Nuggets are not the storied program they are because they go lightly.
They made a furious comeback effort getting as close as seven at 53-46, but the Lady Hornets iced it with four straight free throws by seniors Kayla Smith and Chelsea Nordquist.
The Lady Hornets were led by Berven with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Nordquist added 10 points and had seven assists.
The Nuggets were led by Sannes with 16 points. Noreen added 12 points.
Berven Scores 1,000th in Lady Hornet Loss
Frazee has another 1,000-point career scorer in Berven, who scored her 1,000th career point in a 39- 32 loss to Wadena-Deer Creek at Concordia Saturday night.
"We are very proud of Abby's accomplishment as she has worked hard to get where she is," Swenson said.
The first half saw a seesaw battle between two teams battling for position in the section standings.
The Lady Hornets went ahead 16-13 on a bucket by Nordquist, but the Wolverines answered with the next five points to take a 18-16 lead into the locker room the last three coming on a three pointer by senior Brigetta Berg.
"The first half was not played very cleanly but the two teams were battling," Swenson said.
The second half started off with two straight buckets by the Wolverines to take a 22-16 lead, but the Lady Hornets would respond with a 5- 0 run which included three points by freshman McKinzie Tangen to get within one at 22-21.
Frazee went on another 6-0 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 31-27 late in the second half.
Berg scored the next four starting a 9-0 run for the Wolverines to take a 36-31 lead that would give them control with a minute to go.
Free throws would ice the game for W-DC as they survived the section battle.
"This was a huge game in the section especially after beating Hawley last night but we just came up a little short," Swenson said.
The Lady Hornets were led by Berven with 14 points as she now sits at 1,001 for her career.
Her 1,000th point came at the free throw line where she was 6-6 and is now shooting 79-percent for the season.
"A great accomplishment, she becomes the fifth girl to score 1,000 points at Frazee joining Courtney Kallis, Katie Stearns, Cheri Beyer and Tara Heston. Nice company to be in," Swenson said.
Yellowjackets win heated rivalry Game
The Perham Yellowjackets came into this big rivalry game with a perfect 16- 0 HOL record and 20-1 overall record and remained perfect in the conference with a hard fought 58 46 victory over the Lady Hornets.
The Yellowjackets were led by Elisa Moenkedick with 17 points, while Miller added 12 points.
The Lady Hornets were led by Mickelson with 14 points. Berven and Chelsea Nordquist scored 11 and nine points, respectively. "Very proud of our kids, Perham is a very good team and we proved we could play with them," the Frazee coach commented.
Frazee drops to 10-7 in the HOL and 12-11 overall.
They will travel to Park Rapids Thursday and Breckenridge Friday to wrap up their regular season.
