Lady Hornets roll for 2 more wins
After beating the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines 63-60 in overtime on Dec. 28, in the Walker Christmas Tournament, the Frazee Lady Hornets were faced with the tough task of a rematch with the Wolverines just eight days later.
Frazee was up to the challenge, as they ended the game with an 8-1 run to pull out an exciting 58-55 victory Saturday evening in Frazee.
"That is an awfully good team we beat and to beat them twice in eight days is a credit to the girls," head coach Dave Conzemius said.
"Wadena really made a nice run at us in the second half, but our kids were resilient and able to step up and make big plays down the stretch."
Frazee (8-2 record) came out and played strong defense in the first half, as they took a 25-11 lead with about six minutes left in the first half. Wadena (8-5 record) finished the half strong, however, and cut the lead to six at halftime.
The Lady Hornets started the second half with an 8-2 run to take a 12-point lead, only to see the Wolverines score 12 straight to tie the game at 34 with just under 10 minutes to play.
From there, the two teams went back and forth until Wadena made a small run to take a 54-50 lead with 3:30 left in the game.
Frazee responded with one free throw each from Josi Tappe and Alexis Tappe, and when Alexis Tappe nailed a deep 3-pointer on their next possession, Frazee pulled even at 55-55.
Following a couple of empty possessions for both teams, Alexis Tappe tipped a pass that was stolen by Ashley Bachmann.
Alexis Tappe was fouled dribbling up the floor with 16 seconds left. Tappe promptly stepped to the free throw line and hit both free throws to give the lead back to the Lady Hornets.
The Wolverines again turned the ball over and following a free throw from Josi Tappe, Wadena attempted a long three-pointer at the buzzer which was blocked by Taylor Tappe.
"As a team, we really played good defense tonight, especially down the stretch," Conzemius said.
"Katie McCorquodale and Taylor Tappe did a great job on their two guards, holding them to 15 points combined after the scored 39 points against us last time. Bachmann made a couple of huge defensive plays in the last minute to give us a shot to pull out the game.
"Overall, it was a tremendous team effort and great victory for us."
Alexis Tappe led the way with 26 points and five assists. Josi Tappe had 14 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals, and Kennady Barlund had a solid night, adding eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Bombers downed by Frazee
The Lady Hornets nailed seven first half three pointers as they took a commanding 48-14 halftime lead en route to a 65-27 victory over Waubun Monday night in Waubun.
The Tappe sisters, Josi and Alexis, combined for 35 first half points to lead the Lady Hornets (9-2 record).
In the second half, Frazee was able to use many different combinations of players as they coasted to the victory.
Alexis Tappe led the way with 27 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. Josi Tappe added a career high 15 points and seven steals and Kennady Barlund had nine points.
"It was a good to see us come out ready to play after a tough victory over Wadena on Saturday," head coach Dave Conzemius said. "We ran the floor really well and also played solid defense as a team."
Frazee is back in action on Thursday when they host Park Rapids for Parents Night. The Lady Hornets will also host Perham on Monday.
