Lady Hornets squeak past Perham
The Frazee Lady Hornet basketball team went to Perham for a Heart O'Lakes Conference matchup Thursday night.
Despite a strong effort from the Yellowjackets, Frazee was able to pull out a 64-60 victory, giving them a sweep of Perham for the first time since the 2002-03 season.
The victory was also a Frazee girls basketball record 18th win on the season.
"The win record is really a credit to the kids and all of the hard work they have put in to become better both individually and as a team," head coach Dave Conzemius said. "Now we
can focus on picking up a few more wins in the last week and get ready for the playoffs."
Frazee (18-4 overall, 7-3 HOL) appeared like they would take control late in the first half as they took a 33-20 lead. But a quick 7-2 run allowed Perham (1-22, 0-11 HOL) to creep back into the game.
The same happened in the second half, as Frazee took a 14-point lead and 12-point lead, only to see the Yellowjackets battle back both times.
Frazee was able hold off Perham down the stretch from the free throw line, as the Lady Hornets finished the game 22-for-31 at the line.
The biggest free throws came from Ashley Bachmann with five seconds left, as the senior hit two straight to put the game away.
"Those were some big free throws from Ashley," Conzemius said. "Perham really focused on taking her away tonight and for her to be able to hit those on a night where she didn't get a lot of looks at the basket, shows what kind of character she has."
Alexis Tappe led Frazee with 24 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and four steals. Katie McCorquodale had 16 points and Taylor Tappe added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Perham was led by Tina Scheidecker with 17 points. Miranda Lockhart had 11 points and Sydney Roberts had 10.
"We feel very fortunate to get the win tonight," Conzemius added. "I give Perham a lot of credit and they really battled hard despite having a rough season.
"In a rivalry game like this, anything can happen."
The Lady Hornets will close out the regular season with three straight home games, starting Tuesday against 10th ranked Hawley and finishing with Mahnomen on Thursday and D-G-F on Friday.
