There's a big bunch up in the Class 2A boys' team state golf standings after Wednesday's round and Detroit Lakes is right in the middle of it.

The Lakers finished in fifth place after the first day of state golf meet at the Ridges at Sand Creek Golf Course in Jordan with a score of 315.

But after first-place Orono's 292, plenty of things can be shaken up in Thursday's final round of play.

There are a total of six teams within 14 strokes of each other, as DL occupies the fifth spot, but only three strokes out of fourth and three out of sixth.

But the Lakers felt they left at least eight to nine strokes on the course and look to rectify that Thursday.

"We had some mistakes in the last three holes from several of our players," said DL head coach Bob Gorden. "We needed to believe we were good and belonged here. I don't know if our guys believed that and maybe that led them to be hesitant on some of their shots."

Freshman Karter Smith led the Lakers with a 37-40 for a five-over par 77, while each of freshman Austin Rusness and eighth grader Michael Herzog finished with a 79 and tied for 39th.

Juniors Connor Hedstrom and Tanner Lane each carded an 80, while senior Nate Ginnaty finished with an 86.

"Michael Herzog shot as solid as anyone, but he lost one on hole 13 and two double bogeys," Gorden said. "We had some slow starts, too, which maybe was caused by the lack of (state) experience."

Lane was one of the Lakers who started slow, after striking a six-over par after five holes, but recovered to finish just eight-over.

Smith was four-over par after five holes, but went on a string of 12 straight pars to finish with his 77.

In 2008, the Lakers were 13 strokes down from first-place Orono and stormed back to tie for the co-state championship.

Gorden hopes similar happenings go on tomorrow in Jordan.

"I thought we should have been eight to 10 strokes lower today, but now they need to finish strong and just worry about their own games," the DL coach added.

Senior Jake Erickson of Holy Angels leads the field with a three-under par 69.

The Lakers will start teeing off at 12:25 p.m. with all six DL golfers starting in consecutive groups.
