Laker boys tennis takes bronze in Mid-State Conference
The Detroit Lakes boys' tennis team proved to be overachievers in the Mid-State Conference meet by finishing ahead of their original seeds in seven positions to finish third as a team last Thursday in Park Rapids.
Alex Fondrick won the Lakers' lone championship, taking the No. 2 singles title with a 6-4, 6-3 sweep in the championship.
Isaac Fondrick just missed winning the No. 1 singles Mid-State banner by falling in the championship match 6-4, 6-4.
"If both continue to improve, we can make some noise at the sections in a week and a half," said DL head coach Wade Johnson.
Cody Jordan also played to the championship match, but fell to finish with a silver, while Austin Nelson was third at No. 4 singles.
The Lakers finished third in two doubles slots, as Derick Brehm and Ethan Brekke were bronze winners at No. 1 doubles and Caleb Howard and Chandler Hanks did the same at No. 3.
Cody Knopf and Hunter Hedstrom were fifth at No. 2 doubles.
The Lakers will host Perham Thursday for a later start at 7 p.m.
Mid-State Conference meet in Park Rapids, Thursday, May 10.
