"Overall, it was a good day to help us see where we're at early in the season," said DL head coach Jim Hinson. "Our challenge in the days ahead is to continue to work on our skills, but also to find good combinations of doubles teams.

"We have about a dozen players who are fairly equal in singles."

With the Wolverines down in numbers, the Lakers were able to take advantage of that to win 7-0.

"We juggled our lineup a bit and played some different player combinations in doubles," Hinson said. "Everybody played well."

Isaac Fondrick battled W-DC's Taylor Garcia in a close three-set match, winning the final one on a 7-3 tiebreaker.

The rest of the Lakers won in straight sets to overmatch the Wolverines.

Crookston has had the opportunity to play outside a bit more than DL and it showed in a 5-2 win.

Two DL doubles teams were victorious in the duo of CJ Hanson and Levi Nordine, along with No. 2 team of Mike Bogda and Tim Fouquette.

Hanson and Nordine won the third set over Cole Wahouske and Khris Johnson on a 7-5 tiebreaker, while Bogda and Fouquette won in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.

"Crookston already is stroking the ball with good pace," Hinson said. "Our players were a bit behind, simply because we haven't seen that much pace."

But even with the defeat, the DL coach was pleased with what he saw from his young team in their first live action of the season.

"I was satisfied with our results overall," Hinson said. "I was very happy with our team attitude and effort. Again, we graduated 10 seniors in 2008, so we have lots of tennis shoes to fill."

The Lakers will host Alexandria and Thief River Falls Friday starting at 1 p.m.
