A heavy amount of seniors will key the Detroit Lakes boys’ track and field team this season, as the Lakers will be in pursuit of a section True Team title.

The Lakers will have plenty of leadership spread around in each event, as experience will also be a strength.

“This is the most seniors we’ve had on the team in a while,” said DL head boys’ coach Steve Zamzo.

DL has around 50 athletes out for the 2013 season, with a strong number in the ninth and 10th grades.

The Lakers will be solid in the sprints, with senior Montana Johnson leading the way.

First-year trickster senior Stephen Erb will also be a contributor in the sprints, as will junior Casey Paskey. Eighth grader Brady Labine also will be a contributor in the 200 dash.

In the mid to long-distance races, senior Mike Okeson will be competitive in the 400 and 800 events, while juniors Isaac Clem and Zach Foltz will be anchors in the longer races of the 1,600 and 3,200.

Others who will run long distance will be junior Mark Shipman, senior Tom Sorum and freshman Austin Askleson.

“(Junior) Jake Fritz is also a very strong runner with another gear,” Zamzo added.

Sophomores Sam Champa and Jonathan Hallisey each will be strong jumpers, along with sophomore Ross Kalberer.

“We’re young in our jumps and also short in our hurdle events, just because it’s such a specialized event,” Zamzo said.

Junior Josh Weber started off well in the shot put by taking third in the opening indoor meet at Concordia and is looking to improve through the season.

The Lakers will be in the hunt for the section True Team title, in which they were just beat out last year. DL will host the Section 8 True Team May 7.

“If the guys work hard, we have a good chance at it,” Zamzo said.

The Lakers will host the Craig Fredrickson Invite May 2, and also the Section 8-2A preliminaries May 29.
