Laker football looks to play a 'complete' game against Duluth Denfeld Friday

Email

Friday's 25-14 road victory over Duluth Central marked the apex game of the season for the Detroit Lakes football team -- but the victory is already in the rearview mirror.

Coming off their biggest win of the season, the Lakers still need plenty of progress as they head into the second-half of their schedule.

And it begins Friday with another trip to Duluth, to face Duluth Denfeld for a 5:15 p.m start.

"We are putting our concerns on ourselves and we made a lot of mistakes against Duluth Central," said DL head coach Flint Motschenbacher. "I was pleased with the win, but after watching the game tape, there were mistakes made. We've now played four games and we can't use the excuse of being inexperienced anymore."

The Lakers did have four turnovers in the first half against the Trojans, but the DL defense was able to keep the potent D.C. offense scoreless.

DL's offense picked up the pace in the second half, scoring 25 points and not turning the ball over in either the third or fourth quarters.

The Hunters of Duluth Denfeld are coming off an 8-6 loss to Grand Rapids Friday, dropping them to 1-2 on the season.

"They can move the ball offensively, but they just have made mistakes to not be able to punch it in," Motschenbacher said. "They are a capable football team."

The DL coach said there will be a pressing need to play an entire game, something the Lakers didn't do Friday against the Trojans.

"We have the experience now and the players know what it takes to play an entire game," Motschenbacher added. "They need to eliminate their mistakes."

DL quarterback Reed Oistad found the end zone three times Friday, raising his point total to 36 with six rushing TDs on the season.

Senior fullback Dustin Rietsema, who has been keyed on by defenses in just about every game, leads the Lakers in rushing with 295 yards on 59 carries (five yards per carry average).

Oistad has thrown for 412 yards with a 46 percent completion rate (23-50), for an 8.2 yards gained average per completion and an 89.33 quarterback rating.

Sophomore wide receiver Josh Stalberger leads the team in receptions with seven, for 88 total yards and two touchdowns.

The Lakers (3-1) will look to stay undefeated in the North Country Conference, with kickoff scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Friday.
