Despite taking sixth place out of nine teams at the Class 2A state True Team meet in Stillwater Saturday, the Detroit Lakes girls’ track and field team still made their mark after winning four events and taking runner-up in three.

But the quality and depth in this year’s True Team event was like no other, with the competitive level being at an all-time high.

“I cannot remember the state True Team being as tough across the board as it was this year,” said DL head girls’ coach Mike Labine. “Every team down there had top athletes. But we had a great day, nonetheless, and I tried to find points we didn’t get and they just were not there.”

The Lakers didn’t have many events in which they didn’t improve on, as they finished with 308.5 points. Sartell won the title with a 396.5.

“We had personal records all over the board, but kids on other teams had huge time cuts,” Labine said. “We just didn’t have that big day which is required to finish in the top three.”

The Lakers did win four events, as Lindsey Heinecke won the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.31, while Shay Nielsen dominated the throwing events, taking the shot put with a 42-03 and the discus at 126-08.

“That shows what Shay is all about, in that she responds well in the pressure situations,” Labine added.

Allison Berg also won the long jump with a mark of 17-04, while taking third in the high jump with a height of 5-0.

Megan Ostlie also had a breakout day by landing second in each the 1,600 and 3,200 runs.

“To run both races and finish second in each one, that’s a tough feat to do,” Labine said of Ostlie’s performances.

The 4x200 relay team also placed second with a time of 1:47.33.

“I saw a lot of first timers for us pick up some valuable experience and that was exciting to see, because we are expecting to get back there in the future,” Labine said.

The Lakers will now switch gears and prepare for the Section 8-2A preliminaries.

Section 8-2A is one of the toughest sections to be in, with four teams taking part in the state True Team.

But the Lakers will be contenders in many events, with the preliminaries in Rocori Wednesday, May 28, at 3 p.m.

The Section finals will be held in Thief River Falls Saturday, May 31, starting at 10 a.m.
