Laker girls' basketball bolts out to a 2-0 start
The new addition of senior Chelsea Bjerke is paying early dividends for the Detroit Lakes girls' basketball team.
The Pelican Rapids transfer helped the Lakers to a convincing 60-42 season-opening victory in Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Saturday, scoring 13 points and aiding back court play.
"It helped having Chelsea in the back court, because it freed up Abby (Hoganson)," said DL head coach Mike Hoganson. "Both distributed the ball well and we had some balanced scoring."
Four different Lakers scored in double digits, including senior guard Dani Labine, who led the way with 17 points.
"Dani had her best game of her career," Mike Hoganson said. "She was knocking down shots and was aggressive going to the basket. She has always brought a good perimeter game, but she started taking the ball to the basket (Saturday)."
DL built a 34-22 lead over the Rebels, as both the inside and outside games were working for the Lakers.
Senior post Morgan Lof contributed 12 points, while Abby Hoganson added 10. Sophomore forward Jennifer Matter came off the bench to produce six points.
"Morgan had a nice game, she was able to pull up and shoot from the perimeter and also post up," Mike Hoganson said, adding, "Jennifer Matter also came off the bench and gave us some positive minutes."
Morgan Mathison led D-G-F (0-2) with 17 points, six rebounds and five steals.
The Lakers will continue their early road trip Friday for DL's Mid-State Conference opener in Crosby-Ironton, starting at 7:30 p.m.
Lakers pick up early section win
The Lakers (2-0) jumped out in the section with an important 56-49 victory in Thief River Falls Tuesday.
It wasn't easy, as DL had to rally back from a nine-point deficit with 7:50 to go in the second half, keyed by Lof's 19 points -- all but two coming in the second half.
"Morgan really stepped it up in the second half and carried us down the stretch," Mike Hoganson said. "Abby (Hoganson) really played a smart first half by scoring nine points, with many assists and rebounds."
Abby Hoganson finished with 11 points, while Bjerke scored all five of her points in the second half, as well.
Cassie Gunderson led Thief River Falls with 18 points and Toni Sorteberg chipped in 10.
