Laker girls golfers in third place at state meet
The Detroit Lakes girls' golf team has carved themselves a pretty comfortable groove heading into the second day of the Class 2A state golf meet at the Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.
What is easily the youngest team competing in the Class 2A state meet Wednesday, the Lakers shot a combined 353 to hold third place comfortably, with Albany 17 strokes behind with a 370 and Red Wing far out in second with a 319.
Minnewaska leads the meet and is vying for their fifth-consecutive state title after stroking a 305.
"We are pretty comfortable going into tomorrow," said sophomore Courtney Hedstrom, who led the Lakers with a 42-44-86. "We are completely satisfied with where we are at. Now (Thursday), we just need to go out, have fun and enjoy being in the state."
There wasn't any complacency lingering on the team after qualifying for state with a roster filled with four eighth graders, a seventh grader and a sophomore.
Wednesday's third-place holding proves the Lakers went out to place as well as they could.
"We're very happy with how the day went," said DL head coach Jen Hendrickson. "The course played tough today and the rough was tough to get out of. All the girls felt they had room for improvement, but they went out today and gained the experience they needed."
Eighth grader Trisa Hutchinson finished with a 43-45-88, while fellow eighth grader Natalie Roth broke 90 for the second time this season after she stroked a 42-47-89.
"We are excited for Natalie," Hendrickson said. "She is usually our fourth score and she really stepped up her game and played well."
Eighth grader Matty Tschider finished with a 90 for DL's final fourth counted score, with seventh grader Sydney Busker finishing with a 101 and eighth grader Emma Thompson a 107.
Hedstrom, who is the lone holdover from the 2008 DL third-place state finish, is playing a different role this time around as the team's elder.
"I'm in a completely different role this year, now I have much higher expectations and expect to place higher," said Hedstrom, who holds 23rd place after Wednesday.
The Lakers will start teeing off at 8:15 a.m. tomorrow for the final day of competition.
