DETROIT LAKES - The nothing-to-lose attitude the Detroit Lakes girls' tennis team is employing this season is already paying off, after a good start this past week.
The Lakers had a pair of runner-up finishes in the Staples-Motley individual tournament Wednesday in the season opener, while downing Perham 4-3 Thursday to start 1-0 in dual matches.
It was a start DL head coach Kris Omberg was looking for, one which has installed some confidence and a good tone-setter for the rest of the season.
"Our girls went into the matches with a nothing to lose attitude and 'let's go in and see what we can do,' and good things happened," Omberg said. "It's exciting to get that first dual win, they didn't see too many of those last year."
The Perham victory came down to the third doubles match, where Whitney Benscoter and Laurenn Johnson played to a three-set match and prevailed, with a 7-5 decisive win in the final set.
The duo, which were just put together Wednesday for the S-M tournament, had a good showing right off the bat after taking second place at the No. 3 doubles slot.
"They were a last-second duo and we just mixed and matched them together (Wednesday)," Omberg said. "They played well together. They placed the ball well and got the points when they needed them."
The Lakers won three singles matches against Perham, including at the first, second and fourth slots.
All the victories came in straight sets, including Joelle Langworthy (first singles), Justine Haukebo (second) and Katie Anderson (fourth).
In Staples Wednesday, Anderson kicked off her season with an impressive runner-up finish at the fourth singles spot.
She went 2-1, cruising through her first two matches in straight sets, while losing to the top player in the tournament in the title tilt.
"She was consistently hitting the ball well, staying at the point and when the opportunity came to put her opponent away, she did," Omberg said.
The Lakers will continue their schedule with a home triangular Tuesday against Moorhead and Staples starting at 11 a.m., play at Park Rapids Thursday and end the week with another triangular with Fergus Falls and Thief River Falls Friday, starting at noon.
