Laker girls' tennis picks up another win
The Detroit Lakes girls' tennis team made another stride toward improvement with a split Friday in their home triangular, where they finished with a 5-2 win over Fergus Falls and a narrow 4-3 defeat to Thief River Falls.
The Lakers were once again playing well in singles action, winning three of four against the Prowlers, while sweeping the Otters.
Katie Anderson rallied in the first set against her Fergus Falls opponent, after being down 3-4 and coming back to win it, then cruised through her second set to win the match.
Joelle Langworthy and Justin Haukebo each swept their opponents at one and two, respectively, both in straight sets.
"Joelle and Justine both had a great day and both looked confident in their games," said DL head coach Kris Omberg. "Joelle's serving was exceptional, along with her strong ground strokes.
"Justine is looking stronger and stronger every match and has been making improvements with her serve, and so far they have been working very well for her."
Becca Ask went 1-1 on the day, with a strong win against her Fergus Falls opponent, 6-2, 6-3 to help the Lakers sweep through singles play.
Doubles is still a work in progress, but progress is being made, Omberg said.
"Our doubles players are still learning how to play with each other and we have been mixing up our doubles teams a lot lately," Omberg said. "There is so much strategy with doubles and (assistant coach) Danielle Schmitz has been working with them quite a bit in practice, and you can see it all coming together for them."
The Lakers will next host Wadena-Deer Creek in a Mid-State Conference matchup Thursday, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
