Laker girls win in Bemidji

Email

With the outdoor track and field season still in limbo with the extended winter still hanging on for dear life, the Detroit Lakes boys’ and girls’ team did the next best thing – they stayed indoors last Thursday.

The Lakers competed in their third indoor meet of the season, as the girls won the Snowflake Invite out of 12 teams competing at Bemidji State University, while the boys took second to the Bemidji Lumberjacks.

“I though the girls had a really good meet and across the board, I thought they competed very well,” said DL head girls’ coach Mike Labine.

“We again showed a really good combination of girls with top three finishes and also team depth in winning the meet by over 20 points.”

Lindsey Heinecke is sprinting in strong form  after winning both the 200 and 400-meter dash events with times of 26.2 and 59.3 times, respectively.

In fact, DL had five of the top nine places in the 400 dash.

Kyley Foster tied for first in the 60-meter hurdles with a 10.0, while Allison Berg was a silver-place winner in the long jump (15-06.5) and won the triple jump with a 33-08.

Darcy Molander followed in second in the triple with a distance of 33-07.5.

“Both had jumps well over 33 feet, which is impressive at this time of year,” Labine said.

Megan Ostlie did well in the 1,600 run with a second-place finish, while Shay Nielsen was second in the shot put with a 40-08.

“Megan looked very strong and I though the distance girls as a whole, looked good,” Labine said. “Shay Nielsen had another good day in the shot put, going over 40 feet already. We are looking forward to getting her outside and seeing her throw the discus, as well.”

The boys finished in second with 80 points, behind Bemidji’s 119.

Josh Weber won the shot put with a distance of 48-07, while Isaac Clem and Ross Kalberer tied for second in the high jump at 5-06.

Montana Johnson also took silver in the 60 dash with a 7.3.

Next up for the Lakers is the spring thaw, which will now just be a waiting game until the snow is dissipated and gone.
