Laker going to be a Cobber: DL's Foltz commits to Concordia
Detroit Lakes' fifth-leading wrestler in career wins, senior Gabe Foltz, will be extending his stellar grappling career after committing to the Concordia College men's team earlier this week.
Foltz finished his Laker career with 120 wins and was a two-time state wrestler. He holds the DLHS career takedown record with 423 and won the 103 and 106-pound Section 8-2A title in back-to-back seasons.
He finished with a 4.0 GPA and was named Academic All-Section three times, Academic All-State Second Team and Academic All-State First Team.
"We wanted Gabe pretty bad," said Concordia head wrestling coach Clay Nagel.
"We had him rated as a top 10 wrestler in the state and he will fit in very well here, because he's a good, moral and ethical kid."
Nagel, along with his son Matt Nagel (who is associate head coach), don't redshirt their wrestlers and the wrestling program has an outstanding 96 percent four-year graduation rate.
"That's one of our big attributes," Clay Nagel added about the high graduation rate within the four-year period.
Foltz will compete for the Cobbers' 125-pound slot and Nagel said the Laker has a good shot as any to claim a spot as a starter.
"He has a lot of wins as a high school wrestler and you can pretty much double that from his summer matches in Greco and Freestyle," the Cobber coach included.
"He's going to be a good fit for our team."
Concordia was ranked in the top 20 of the nation throughout the 2011-12 season.
They finished the season by placing seventh at the NCAA Division III National Meet -- the highest finish in program history.
The 2011-12 season also saw a record-setting three All-Americans and six national meet participants.
