There's nothing wrong starting the season on top.

The Detroit Lakes gymnastics team already broke its season-high score of last year -- in their first meet of the 2009-10 schedule -- with a 145.325 to 113.65 win over visiting Frazee Tuesday.

DL's Amy Crawford highlighted the meet with her 9.55 on bars, while the vault was a strength, as well, with four 9.0's or better by the Lakers.

"The (uneven bars) judge told me that Amy's score is one of the highest she ever has given in a first meet," said DL head coach Jenny Whipple. "And the vault went great, it was one of the higher scores we've had in a while for our first meet."

Jessica Stelter and Kristi Hoppert each gained 9.4's on the vault, while Crawford went for a 9.15 and Natalie Hoffert a 9.0.

Stelter also won the floor with a 9.5, while Crawford was tops on beam at 9.275 and took all-around honors with a 37.125.

For Frazee, the meet was a solid first outing, as well.

Competing with just four gymnasts, the Hornets scored just a couple points below their season-best from last season.

The Hornets were unable to compete a full varsity roster until Dec. 18, of last season.

"It was a great start with a full squad, albeit there are only four," said Frazee head coach Amie Erickson. "There is a huge improvement and we plan to spend a significant amount of time working on body shapes to assist in correct body positions and less execution deductions."

Emma Buhr notched a personal-best on beam with a 7.4, beating her previous mark of 7.0.

"Emma performed a very well composed, strong routine," Erickson said. "She is very natural (on the beam)."

Jessica Irish finished sixth on floor with a 7.8 to beat her personal-best score of 7.4.

"Jessica created a totally new look for herself with this year's routine," Erickson added. "She has significantly improved her tumbling."

The Lakers will host Jamestown, N.D., on Thursday for a 7 p.m. start.
