Laker linksters stay on course

After setting several personal and season goals during the Mid-State Conference meet last week, the Detroit Lakes girls' golf team proved it wasn't a fluke by doing it again.

The Lakers shot a meet-best 353 Friday at the Longbow Golf Course in Walker, while repeating the feat of all six golfers shooting below the 100 mark.

More importantly, the Lakers also had the chance to golf Longbow, the course which is hosting the Section 8-2A meet next week.

DL is also playing its best golf of the season, which is great timing with the Sub-Sections looming Thursday at Wildflower Golf Course.

"The girls are making good choices on the golf course," said DL coach Cali Harrier. "They are laying up when they need to and deciding to punch out. Their course management has been good."

The Lakers did find out the Longbow large and rolling greens will be a tough hurdle.

It will be a focus of the team to improve on if they make the Section meet.

"There were a lot of three-putts on the day," Harrier said. "It's a challenging course, too, and they need to play it smart."

Laker eighth grader Trisa Hutchinson won medalist laurels with her 84, while sophomore Courtney Hedstrom fired an 88 and Matty Tschider an 89.

Natalie Roth rounded out DL's score with a 92, while seventh grader Sydney Busker broke the 100 barrier for the first time with a 96 and Emma Thompson finished with a 97.

For DL, the No. 5 and 6 golfers will be important in the weeks to come, because the final team score will not be just on shoulders of the top four golfers.

Busker will help provide that quality depth needed to win a section title and her 96 on the day is a good sign of progression.

"I've been practicing a lot and now just have to focus on what I need to improve on now," Busker said. "We are pretty confident we can get a good team score (in Sub-Sections and Sections) because we can all shoot under a 100 now."

Although with each meet win and with the team's confidence growing, Harrier and head coach Jen Hendrickson -- who has been helping coach during the meets now during her maternal leave -- are keeping the golfers reeled in.

"We are preaching literally take it one hole at a time," Harrier said. "The pressure is mounting a little, too, because other teams are aware of us now.

"But everyone is still doing their best and are looking for ways to improve."

The Laker's meet at Wildflower Saturday was cancelled due to scheduling conflicts with the other teams.

The top three teams in the sub-section will advance to the Section 8-2A meet at Longbow, which is Tuesday, with the time to be determined.
