Laker softball ends season vs. Sauk Rapids

Despite holding the No. 11 seed and a record of 5-14, the Sauk Rapids-Rice softball team had a secret weapon against No. 6 seeded Detroit Lakes Wednesday in the first round of the Section 8-3A playoffs in Big Lake.

It came in an eight-grade package named Sammy Patton, who did what no other team could do to the Lakers all season – quiet their bats.

Patton threw a four-hitter against the potent Laker lineup, while striking out 10 to end DL’s season 10-2 in the single elimination portion of the tournament.

“She was one of the best pitchers we’ve seen all year,” said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. “We are a good hitting team and she was able to control our lineup with a good rising fastball, which we couldn’t catch up to.”

Patton, who wasn’t the Storm’s usual starting pitcher throughout the season, was aided by 10 Sauk Rapids hits and a five-run sixth inning.

But the Storm was also helped by five Laker errors, which led to seven unearned runs, all of which occurred when junior starter Chaz Butz was on the mound.

“Chaz pitched well, the defense didn’t help her out,” Kirchner said.

The Lakers had a nice rally developing in the fourth inning when they loaded the bases, but Patton was able to get out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts to leave the pads full.

The Storm took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth, all unearned due to two DL errors.

Two more runs crossed after a Sarah Kaschmitter double led the inning off and yet another DL error allowed her to score.

The lid was blown off in the sixth with five more runs, with Megan Ackerman lacing a two-run single to key the rally.

Senior first baseman Brooke Olson had half of DL’s hits with two, along with an RBI in the sixth inning.

The Lakers finish the season with a 12-8 record.
