DETROIT LAKES - There wasn't much action for the Detroit Lakes defense during their season opener against visiting Wyndmere, N.D. Thursday at Snappy Park, as Laker junior pitcher Callea Butz registered 27 strikeouts in 12 innings of work for the sweep.

Butz was hitting all of her locations, while keeping the Wyndmere batters off-balance in both games, striking out 16 in a 4-2 win in game one and wrapping up with 11 K's in a 5-0 victory in the nightcap.

"Callea kept us in the game and was pitching strikes," said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. "Once she got into her groove, they couldn't hit her."

Wyndmere had two hits in the first game, while being limited to one in the second tilt.

When the Laker defense had plays to make, they cashed in by making just on error combined in both games.

"I was very happy in the first game with our pitching and catching," Kirchner added.

DL had some timely hits in both wins, as well.

The Lakers opened up a 3-0 lead in the third frame after each of senior shortstop Sarah Wilson and catcher Brianna Seebold each hit leadoff singles.

After Wilson stole second and reached on Seebold's single, Kortney Goettel picked up the RBI with a sacrifice bunt.

Seebold scored on Ali Olds grounder to shortstop for the second run of the game.

DL added insurance in the fifth after Seebold drew a leadoff walk and scored on Olds' second RBI of the game, this time with a single.

Kasey Smith scored DL's first run in the opening frame after drawing a walk and later scoring on a Wyndmere error.

DL finished with six hits, with each of Seebold and Goettel gaining two.

"It's early in the season and our bats are cold," Kirchner said. "It'll take some time."

The Lakers rallied in the bottom of the fourth in game two by expanding a 1-0 lead into a 5-0 advantage after picking up two hits, two walks and an error for their four runs.

Amalae Branden reached base on an opening error by Wyndmere, as Smith proceeded with a walk. Branden later scored on a wild pitch.

The gates started to open with Laurenn Johnson hitting a single, with Wilson picking up her first RBI of the season with a one-bagger to score Smith.

The hits kept coming as Seebold laced an RBI single, while later scoring the fourth and final run on a wild pitch.

"We didn't have many hits (four) in the second game, but they were timely hits," Kirchner said.

Butz struck out 11 of 15 possible batters, since the game was scheduled to go just five innings.

"It was a good two games to start with, but we still have lots to work on," the DL coach said.

The Lakers had their invitational tournament Saturday and will host Mid-State Conference opponent Park Rapids Tuesday in a doubleheader starting at 4:30 p.m.
