DETROIT LAKES - The Detroit Lakes summer softball team suffered its first loss of the season in a split with Moorhead Tuesday.

Callea Butz kept the Lakers in game one until DL's bats were awakened in sixth and seventh innings for a 5-2 win, while walks and errors downed them in game two by a score of 11-4.

"Callea kept us in the first game," said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. "Their pitchers was a bit slower than normal, so it took our batters some time to adjust to the speed. But as long as your pitcher and defense keeps you in the game, that's fine."

The rally started with DL down 1-0 heading into the sixth and two outs on the board. Jennifer Wenner poked a double to kick things off, while Brittni Larson followed with an RBI two-bagger of her own.

The Lakers took the 2-1 lead on Stephanie Ianiro's RBI single.

DL added three more runs in the seventh, with Ali Olds and Olivia Hanson drawing lead-off back-to-back walks and Wenner lacing a bases loaded RBI single.

Ianiro registered her second RBI of the game and in as many innings with another run-scoring single, for the 5-2 margin.

Ianiro led DL's offensive attack with a 2-2 night, including two RBIs, while Wenner finished 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Butz had six strikeouts on the game, with four hits allowed. She gave up a run in each of the fourth and seventh frames, while the Lakers' defense had one error.

The Lakers fielded their younger squad in game two, which led to five errors, while Butz struggled with accuracy with five walks and three hit batsmen in the 11-4 loss.

"We want to play all our younger players in the summer, just to get them their innings," Kirchner said. "We had a few errors and walks, but Callea had only given up three earned runs."

The Lakers had four hits, with Jessie Johnson recording an RBI single.

DL (3-1) will play in the Hudson, Wis., tournament this coming weekend. The team has the opportunity to play six to eight games, which is a big benefit in development of the younger players.

"There will be a lot of playing time for all the players and it will be a good time," Kirchner said.
