Laker softball swept by Patriots

Email

The Detroit Lakes softball team is starting to take care of business defensively, after committing only two errors in their Mid-State doubleheader in Pequot Lakes Tuesday.

But good defense was not enough, as the Lakers ran into a hot Patriot pitcher in junior Katie White, who tossed a no-hitter in a 10-0 game one victory and survived an 11-8 win in the night cap.

White was one walk away from a perfect game, while DL pitcher Emma Maguire faced a potent Pequot Lakes lineup, which laid out 13 hits in the five-inning affair.

The Lakers’ bats came alive in game two versus White, belting out 14 hits, but it wasn’t enough, as the Patriots scored in every inning but the sixth for the 11-8 win.

Laker freshman pitcher Kyra Vagle made her varsity debut on the mound and struggled with location, with nine walks given up.

The Pats put together eight timely hits to snag a 7-4 lead heading into the top of the third.

DL put together three runs in the frame to tie the game 7-7, after a Vagle two-out, two-run single.

But DL managed just one more run, as Pequot Lakes widened the gap with runs in each of the third through fifth innings.

Rachel Ianiro went 4-4 with two RBIs in her seventh spot in the lineup, while Vagle was 3-5 with two RBIs. Emily Seebold and Sadie Larson each had two hits.

The Lakers drop to 4-6 on the season and will host a triangular with Bemidji and Thief River Falls Saturday at Snappy Park, starting at 11 a.m.
