The Detroit Lakes girls' swimming and diving team got their collective feet wet for the 2009 season, and it was a pretty good start.

The Lakers won their annual Pentathlon meet Monday inside the BTD Aquatics Center by accumulating a total of 199 points in the five-event competition.

Junior Melissa Paakh and Ashtin Spies paced the Lakers by finishing in the top five in all five events, while the former won four races.

"It was a good showing," said DL head coach Carol McCarthy. "It's a fun meet to start the season off with, and a good one to get the cobwebs out. For the younger girls, it's a good taste of how high school competition is, as well."

Paakh was victorious in each of the 50-yard backstroke (30.40), the 50-breaststroke (33.13), 50-butterfly (27.42) and the 100 individual medley (1:05.06).

She was also second in the 50-freestyle.

Junior Spies finished in the top 10 in three events, while junior Andi Weiss collected a pair of top 15 finishes.

The Lakers had five first-time varsity competitors in the event, who each had a good meet, along with the veterans.

"The girls are in good shape and this meet showed that," McCarthy said. "It also gives me some idea who can do the sprints for us this year."

The Lakers will officially open their season in West Fargo next Thursday, Sept. 10.

West Fargo finished third as a team in the North Dakota state meet last year, so it will be a very good test to start off with.

"They are a powerhouse and this will be a good meet for the older girls," McCarthy said. "They will be going up against state-caliber swimmers."

The start of the meet is at 5:30 p.m. in West Fargo.
