There was no ceiling on Thursday’s Craig Fredrickson Track and Field Invite, as both Detroit Lakes boys’ and girls’ squads defended their home turf with team titles.

It was the first official outdoor meet of the season for many of the teams, as the DL girls won with a score of 178 and the boys with a mark of 147.5.

The meet is a good set-up for the Section 8 True Team meet, which is at Mollberg Field Tuesday, starting at 12:15 p.m.

“It was a pretty good meet for us, with 20 personal best marks set,” said DL head boys’ coach Steve Zamzo. “The cold was tough, though, and we had to really mentally prepare our kids for it.”

The boys had three event victories, including by Jonathan Hallisey in the long jump (20-00.5), Sam Champa in the triple jump (39-09.5) and Josh Weber in the discus (144-09).

“Hallisey breaking 20 feet in the long jump is big for him,” Zamzo said. “Sam Champa taking second in the long jump also was a good mark for him (19-07).”

Montana Johnson remained consistent in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.83, while Jake Fritz, Robert Welty and Alex Webber were second through fourth, respectively in the 400 dash.

Ross Kalberer and Hallisey were second and third in the high jump as well, at 5-06 and 5-04, respectively.

In the shot put, DL claimed the second and third-place slots with Weber (46-0) and Kirby Siewert (42-09).

Next up will be the True Team meet Tuesday, where the Lakers hope to advance to state with a top position.

“We are hoping for top three, with Little Falls being tough after winning it last year,” Zamzo said. “But we feel pretty strong about our chances.”

The Laker girls had four first-place finishes, with a bevy of second-place finishes as well.

Megan Ostlie was first in the 1,600 run with a 5:42.42, while Mackenzie Foltz was near her in second at 5:46.07.

Miranda Olson won the 3,200 run and Mackenzie Ostlie was second.

Allison Berg looks to be back in form in the high jump after winning it with a 5-0, and also took the triple jump at 33-03.5, while Kyley Foster was second in the 100 hurdles with a 17.47.

Lindsey Heinecke also took silver twice in the 100 and 200 dash events, with Addie Kay Johnson taking second in the 400 dash.

Shay Nielsen rounded out DL’s day with a second-place finish in the shot put at a distance of 40-01.
