Lakers add 4 as All-Conference
There were four individual Detroit Lakes’ swimmer and divers who earned All-Conference Mid-State honors after a good meet inside the BTD Aquatics Center last Friday evening.
The Lakers also had an All-Conference relay team, as well, as DL will head into the Section 8-1A meet with some good momentum.
To earn All-Conference, an individual or relay team must place first in their respective events.
Grace Livermore led the way with two all-conference finishes in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke.
“Grace’s 200 IM and 100 backstroke times should place her very well in the seedings going into Sections,” said DL head coach Carol McCarthy.
Kyley Foster broke her own Mid-State diving record, as well as the pool record for 11 dives, making her one to contend with come Section time.
Seventh grader Syd Gulon had a personal best swim in the 500 freestyle with a first-place finish, as well.
“Syd is fun to watch on so many levels,” McCarthy said. “She attacks the 500 with pure raw energy. As a coach I know we she has room to work on her turns which will only make her faster.”
The 200 freestyle relay of Alyssa Anderson, Clara Livermore, Ella Henderson and Maddy Schiller swam an amazing race. Those girls--two seniors, a freshman and an 8th grader gave it their all, worked their finishes and the end result was a first place and All-Conference laurels.
DL also had several honorable mention All-Conference finishes, as well.
“To see those kids who work hard all season stand up there in the top three at Mid-State is a great feeling,” McCarthy said.
The second and third place finishes for All Conference Honorable Mention included the 200 medley relay of Grace Livermore, Clara Livermore, Maddy Schiller and Gulon.
“It was the best time they posted all year as a relay which tells me they are ready to drop more time at Sections,” the DL coach said. “Our 200 freestyle “B” relay of Abbi Smith, Berit Ramstad-Skoyles, Maddie Henderson and Sam Hanson took third place.
“Again, we had a seventh-grader, an 8th grader, and two juniors (one of which is a first year swimmer) gaining some great experience being recognized for out-swimming their opponents.”
Prior to winning the 500, Gulon took third in the 50 free, as well.
“All I saw was a big smile on Syd’s face the whole meet,” McCarthy added. “That’s what it’s all about.”
One of the best races of the meet was in the 100 breaststroke, where four Lakers were in the fastest heat.
“Clara Livermore is so fun to watch her gliding along with her long stroke,” McCarthy said. “I’m usually close to having a heart attack at the finish.”
Katie Arens had a personal best in the 100 breaststroke, too.
The 400 freestyle relay also posted their fastest time this year and finished with a respectable third place.
“We are right where we need to be going into sections,” McCarthy said.
