When Detroit Lakes junior Brock Johnson is tormenting opposing batters from the mound -- i.e., last Thursday's perfect game with 13 strikeouts versus Frazee -- he's doing it from the plate.

Johnson owned the Wadena-Deer Creek pitchers Friday at Washington Park, going a combined 5-6, with three home runs, six RBIs, four runs scored and a triple in DL's sweep of its Mid-State Conference opponents.

His numbers were backed up nicely by DL's leading hitter, senior shortstop Reed Oistad -- whose batting average is hovering around the .600 mark -- after he went a combined 5-8, with five runs scored and three doubles (in one game).

Needless to say, the Lakers won both by the scores of 8-4 and 10-5.

"We swung the bat well," said DL head coach Steve Fuhs of his team's 24 total hits in the doubleheader. "Just a lot of guys contributed and our bottom of the order guys were getting on base."

The Lakers had a total of 11 extra base hits and in each game, Johnson set the pace with some big fence busters.

Johnson laced a pair of two-run shots in the first innings of each game to give DL a 2-0 start.

In game one, ironically, the game was busted open on a double squeeze bunt by Brett Provo, who laid down his dribbler while each of Brandon Johnson and Andy Petersen rounded third base towards home plate.

"It was the first time we executed our squeeze bunt and Brett did a nice job of laying one down," Fuhs added.

That capped a four-run second for the 6-0 advantage.

Brock Johnson added a triple to finish 3-3 with two RBIs, while senior centerfielder Max Knoll went 3-4 with two runs scored.

Oistad came in for relief of starter Nick Polejewski in the third inning to record the win, allowing six hits and two runs by the W-DC batters.

Johnson again broke the Lakers into the scoring column with a two-run blast to start the second game, while Oistad continued his searing pace by going 4-4 with three doubles and four runs scored.

"Reed is swinging a hot bat," Fuhs included.

Johnson kept pounding W-DC pitches, as he hit his third of the day in the fourth inning, which was yet another two-run roundtripper.

T.J. Manning also introduced himself to the Wolverine hurlers, going 3-4 with two RBIs.

Alex Guetter also had a no-hitter going into the fifth inning for DL, before the Wolverines marked up four runs in the seventh, as Provo relieved him to clean things up.

Guetter finished with nine strikeouts and allowed just four hits and walked two.

"Alex was outstanding in the first six innings," Fuhs said. "He mixed his stuff up well and had thrown only 40 pitches heading into the fifth. He's our second guy behind Brock (Johnson) heading into the playoffs."

The Lakers (10-6) dropped a 6-2 loss in Moorhead Tuesday.

The Spuds came up with the timely hits off of Brock Johnson, who pitched six innings, allowing six hits and only one earned run due to three DL errors.

"We hit the ball well, despite only having six hits, but our guys were swinging the bats well," Fuhs said. "It was a good game, it was just that Moorhead came up with the big hits."

Brock Johnson went 2-3 to lead DL, while Moorhead had clutch hits by Joe Pietrick and Chance Bitzer in a four-run fifth inning.

The Lakers will play at Thief River Falls Thursday and will start Section 8-2A play Thursday at the high seed.

DL has an inside track on getting a top three seed, which would ensure the team a home game Thursday.
