Lakers blast all-time state meet record

There was one more carrot left dangling for the Detroit Lakes girls’ golf team and the Lakers snatched it handily Wednesday during the Sub-Section 8-2A meet at Wildflower.

The Lakers’ sights were set on 292, the all-time Minnesota meet record set by Minnewaska, one of the only goals which had eluded DL during its three-year domination on the course.

As it turned out, the bar set to beat 292 was much too low for the Lakers, as they smashed that mark by shooting an all-time Minnesota low 284, as all six golfers carded scores under 80.

“It all came together for us,” said sophomore Kate Smith, who led the pack with a four-under par 68. “We definitely wanted to break the record before state, so it’s nice to have that off our back.”

The next two Lakers shot under or at par, with seniors Trisa Hutchinson finishing with a two-under 70 and Emma Thompson recording an even 72.

Senior Matty Tschider was next in with a two-over par 74 and was followed by last year’s co-state medalist (along with Smith), senior Natalie Roth with a 75 and junior Sydney Busker, who came in with a very solid 77.

Smith started her day off by sinking two eagles on her first two holes, thus setting the pace for what would become a historical feat.

“When I saw Kate’s first drive, that’s when I knew today was the day,” said DL head coach Cali Harrier. “After we shot a 295 out here in our final meet, we figured we were close to getting a 291.

“But a 284 was never even thought of.”

The top four scores which counted actually equaled a four-under par as a team, which is unheard of in modern day team golf.

“When I was at the scorer’s table and I saw Emma’s 72 come in, I thought we had it,” Harrier said. “But the scorers just kept getting better and better as they came in.”

Second place Pelican Rapids trailed by 107 strokes with a 391, as the top three teams will be heading to the Section 8-2A meet at Longbow Golf Course in Walker Monday.

“We feel we could go lower, but right now, we are all still in awe over it,” Smith said.

As the words “best ever” start being floated around describing this Laker girls’ golf team, they have their sights set on one meet – the Section 8-2A one.

“We are looking at the section now and that’s it,” Harrier said. “I told the girls, if you play your game and are having fun, we’ll do well.”

But taking their third consecutive state title will not be a given. Pequot Lakes won their sub-section with a 299, while Red Wing is still a threat to unseat the Lakers.

“We will have to be on our game,” Harrier said. “Now, they just need to enjoy that 284 and play their game.”
