Lakers boys' basketball team runs out of gas against Alexandria
Playing with a short bench, the Detroit Lakes boys' basketball team is learning a lesson in conditioning while playing their games.
The Lakers dropped their second game of the season after falling short against visiting Alexandria Tuesday, 60-49.
DL's tired legs led to more missed shots later in the second half, during a time the Lakers needed them to stay with the Cardinals.
"Their legs got tired and they didn't hit their free throws, probably because of that," said DL head coach Robb Flint. "But the guys kept battling back and hit some big shots to keep it close. Allowing just 60 points to a good Alexandria team should be good enough to win the game."
The Lakers used the three pointer to gain some ground on Alexandria's lead, the largest boost being a 10-0 run midway through the second half, which shaved a 45-31 deficit to 45-41.
After the Cardinals' senior guard Matt Peterson drained a trey to put his team up 45-31, the Lakers buckled down defensively and started their rally on an Alex Guetter put-back for two, along with a free throw for the natural three-point play.
A Guetter steal led to a Joe Mollberg backdoor layup, which was followed by another field goal by the sophomore forward to creep DL back into the game at 45-38.
Junior guard Connor Hedstrom pulled the Lakers to within four on a slashing move to the bucket, which netted him the field goal and free throw with 10:33 remaining in the game.
"I am excited with how hard the guys are playing, they all just kept working hard and kept the game close," Flint said.
But the Cardinals used the three-point shot to their advantage, as well, as Mark Whiting stopped DL's rally with a long trey of his own.
That was followed up by Parker Giroux's driving basket and a back-breaking three at the 8:34 mark to put the visitors up 53-41.
Giroux finished the game with a game-high 18 points, while Hedstrom led all DL scorers with 17 points, including four three pointers.
The Lakers (0-2) will host Crosby-Ironton Friday at 7:30 p.m.
"We'll be getting a few more pieces back, so I think we'll be OK," Flint included.
