The Lakers (6-2-1) blasted through Mankato West on Tuesday in getting a 4-1 win.

Detroit Lakes scored three goals in the first period, taking the steam out of the Scarlets.

Tanner Lane opened the scoring at the 1:40 mark of the game.

Nate Baker scored twice in the first to put the game in hand.

Lane added a power-play goal in the second period to finish Detroit Lakes' scoring.

"We had a real good first two periods," said Detroit Lakes coach Chris Denardo. "It was pretty much all we needed."

Mankato West got on the board in the third period with Jace Leiferman getting one past Laker goalie Andrew Friesen.

Friesen had 27 saves on the day.

Detroit Lakes kept out of the penalty box for the most part, with the Lakers totaling four minutes in the box.

The Scarlets on the other hand had 22 minutes in the box, including a 10-minute game penalty handed to Nate Jose in the second period for interference.

Denardo said that the Scarlets were a bit frustrated against Detroit Lakes' top line, and had to clutch and grab to slow the pace down, leading to the penalties.

Lakers show intensity in opening-round game

The Lakers earned a tie in the record book in their opening-round game versus West Fargo on Monday, but lost in the scorebook.

Detroit Lakes earned a 5-5 tie against the Packers. For tournament purposes, all games go to a shootout if tied at the end of regulation.

The game is officially counted as a tie.

In the third period, it turned out to be a shootout for the Lakers as they scored three goals in five minutes.

"It shows the boys the game's not over," said Detroit Lakes coach Chris Denardo.

Down 4-2, DL's Ethan Brekke opened the rampage with a goal at the 2:05 mark, assisted by Lane and Davis Johnson.

Lane scored on a penalty shot at the 5:19 mark.

Brett Provo put Detroit Lakes up 5-4 at 7:14 into the period, with assists by Nate Ginnaty and Andy Schupp.

The Packers tied it, though, with 1:19 left in the game as Jeremy Johnson scored on Andrew Friesen.

Despite losing in the shootout, Denardo said that his team came back strong after lapsing a bit in the early part of the game.

"We didn't have complete first and second periods," he said.

The players adjusted by the time the second intermission rolled around. "The kids came out with intensity," Denardo said.

Detroit Lakes scored first just 1:51 into the game, with Schupp tallying a goal. Johnson and Alex Mason assisted on the score.

West Fargo took a 2-1 lead midway through the first period as Connor Jonasson and Derek Sand each scored. Sand's goal came shorthanded during West Fargo's lone power play.

Provo evened the game at 2-all at the 13:16 mark, with Ryan Berg earning the assist.

Austin Dillard put the Packers up by one with a score less than a minute after Provo's goal.

Kyle Shuman's goal near the 10-minute mark of the second period gave West Fargo a two-goal advantage.

Detroit Lakes was whistled for one penalty, and West Fargo was dinged for two.

"It was clean and hard-hitting on both sides," Denardo said.

The Lakers conclude the Fergus Falls tournament tonight (Wednesday) against the host Otters with the opening faceoff at 7 p.m.

The game versus Fergus Falls counts in the section standings and is a big one for the Lakers.

"If you can't get motivated for this, you shouldn't be playing," Denardo said.
