Second chances doomed the Detroit Lakes boys' basketball team, as they fell in Fergus Falls 75-50 Thursday.
Otter senior post Mike Millard scored 28 points, the majority coming on offensive rebounds, while junior guard Austin Rund netted 18 points from the perimeter.
"We knew we had to definitely hold Millard down, but he scored most of his points on his own put-backs," said DL head coach Robb Flint.
"When he has second chances at scoring, he won't miss that too much."
The Lakers (3-5) struggled early by committing seven turnovers in the first three minutes of play, but settled in and only had eight total by halftime, when they trailed 37-39.
DL was able to snip the deficit down to five points with 10 minutes left in the game, but the Otters (6-4) started going inside to Millard, who scored 14 points in the second half.
Laker junior guard Jackson Lyngaas paced the team from the three-point arc in the first half, after sinking five, to lead DL with a total of 17 points.
Senior guards Derek Long added 11 points and Kirk McLeod 12.
"When we can't force turnovers to help get out and run the floor, we have a hard time scoring points," Flint said.
"We just need to continue to improve and start developing a third, fourth and fifth option in scoring, besides Derek and Kirk."
The Lakers hosted Park Rapids (3-6) Friday and will host Staples-Motley (4-3) Thursday, starting at 7:30 p.m.
