Lakers clinch Mid-State Conference title; wrap up No. 1 seed in Section 8-2A North half

DETROIT LAKES - Friday's 3-0 win in the first game of a doubleheader with Pequot Lakes was the clincher for the Detroit Lakes softball team, as the Lakers claimed their first Mid-State Conference championship in nine years.

The second game also was a sealer for the No. 1 seed in the North half of the Section 8-2A playoffs after DL finished with an overall record of 14-5.

But the Lakers will have at least one banner to carry out of the 2010 season after going 11-1 in the Mid-State Conference.

"This is good for the girls and their confidence," said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. "It showed that all their hard work paid off."

The Lakers also had four players named to the All-Conference team in seniors pitcher Callea Butz (11-1, 1.34 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 77 innings), designated hitter Amalea Branden (.358, 11 RBIs), second baseman Donna Wicker (.359) and sophomore catcher Brianna Seebold (.340).

Also named to the All-Conference Honorable Mentioned team were seniors shortstop Shayna Dugger (.262, 17 RBIs), first baseman Cady Cartmell (.306) and sophomore Amanda Young (.267, nine RBIs).

The Lakers couldn't get a good read on Pequot Lakes pitcher Lindzee Johnson in game one, but they only needed five hits to score the 3-0 win.

Each of Seebold and Dugger had RBI hits in the game, while Butz limited the Patriots to three hits total.

Butz only had to pitch to four batters in one inning three times, with one Patriot advancing past second base.

The DL defense only had one error, while Butz struck out five and walked one.

"Butz kept their batters off balance and our defense played wonderful," Kirchner added. "Our bats were not clicking, but they produced just enough to win."

The Lakers scored three runs in the fifth inning of the nightcap to take a 5-0 lead, before Pequot Lakes scored their first runs of the double header in the top of the sixth.

But it was too little, too late as Butz staved off any more runs for the 5-3 win.

Wicker started the big inning with a leadoff single, followed by a walk by Heather Ianiro and a hit batter in Seebold to load the bases.

Dugger reached on an error, with Young picking up an RBI on a single.

All of the Pats' runs came in the sixth, where DL had two errors, which led to all the runs being unearned. The Lakers had three errors in the game.

"Callea has been pitching out of some jams lately by keeping her composure and doing the job by throwing strikes and trusting her defense behind her," Kirchner said.

Wicker completed the day going 3-4 in the game to end the double header 5-7.

The Lakers ended the regular season by winning their final 11 of 12 games, as they head into the Section 8-2A playoffs as a top seed.

The first two rounds are single elimination, with DL hosting No. 8 Roseau Tuesday at 5 p.m.

The second through fourth rounds will be in Thief River Falls Thursday, May 27, and Tuesday, June 1.

The section finals will be at a neutral site Thursday, June 3.
