Lakers' depth on court downs Wadena-Deer Creek
The Detroit Lakes depth was at its best Friday in a 79-65 win over visiting Wadena-Deer Creek in a Mid-State Conference showdown.
Laker leading scorer Josh Stalberger was tearing up the Wolverine defense to the tune of 12 points in the first half, but a badly-placed elbow to his nose knocked the junior post out for the game.
The scoring onslaught didn't end with Stalberger's damaged nose, however. Instead DL finished with a total of five players scoring in double digits, including seven three pointers.
"The guys were knocking down their shots from the perimeter and they did a good job on the offensive boards, with 18 for some easy putbacks," said DL head coach Robb Flint.
Guard Tyler Fode drained four three's himself to key his 14 points, while sophomore Joe Mollberg knocked down 17 points.
Junior guard Connor McLeod contributed 13 points, while Alex Guetter had 10. Stalberger finished with 12 points.
The Lakers also washed up on the boards, with four players hauling in seven or more. Guetter finished with eight rebounds, while Stalberger, Mollberg and Fode each had seven.
W-DC stayed close to the home team up to halftime, with the score favoring DL 37-31, but the Lakers outscored the Wolverines 42-34 in the second after building a 15-point lead midway through.
The win lifts the Lakers to 5-5 after starting the season 0-3.
"We have some players playing with some good confidence and they are playing well after starting 0-3," Flint added.
The Lakers will host Fergus Falls (2-6) Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
