The season started on the right note for the Detroit Lakes girls' tennis team after defeating Perham 6-1 Thursday.

The Lakers, fresh off of playing in the Staples-Motley tournament Wednesday, where they saw several new teams, played well against the Yellowjackets.

All DL singles players won, while DL took two of three in doubles action as well.

"This was the first time we were able to see Laurenn Johnson and Shantel Kluenenberg play in singles this season and they both won quite handily," said DL head coach Kris Omberg. "Right away, you could see some nerves from the players, but as the day went on, you could tell they were working on their game.

"That was encouraging to see."

The majority of the Lakers who played Thursday were coming off a solid 2009 season, so experience was on their side.

Top singles player Joelle Langworthy downed Perham's Hannah Brenk 6-1 and 6-2, while sophomore Katie Anderson made a strong comeback over Suzanne Coleman in second singles action after dropping the first set 7-6.

Anderson battled back to take the second set by tiebreaker, and then cruised in the third set 6-0.

Johnson took the third singles match on a pair of 6-4 scores, while Kluenenberg capped the singles sweep with two 6-0 set wins over Katie Howery.

"With Joelle, Katie and Laurenn, you could tell they were making court adjustments on the fly," Omberg said.

The No. 1 doubles team of senior Tess Hamre and junior Brianna Seebold won in straight sets over Haley Fraki and Rachel Wiskow, while senior Kira Liechter and sophomore Whitney Benscoter took the third doubles in three sets over Makayla Kroenke and Maggie Rennicke.

Maryann Kuebler and Paige Biegler prevented the shutout for Perham with a 6-4 and 7-5 win over DL's eighth grader Emily Seebold and freshman India Fritz.

"Tess and Bri are still learning how to play together and communicate in doubles, but the rest of the doubles are not set, yet," the DL coach added.

Every DL player won at least one of their three matches Wednesday in the eight-team tournament (results were not yet available by press time).

The Lakers will host Moorhead and Staples-Motley Monday at noon.
