A seventh-inning rally came up far too short and far too late as the Detroit Lakes softball team dropped to 0-2 on the season with a 7-3 loss in Thief River Falls Friday.

DL senior pitcher Callea Butz tossed all six innings and gave up just two earned runs, while five errors led to the other five being unearned.

"If we could have played good defense, it would have bee a much closer game," said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. "Thief River Falls hit the ball well, though. But the good news is we are getting better on defense."

The Lakers did cut their errors by over half from their season opener 13 defensive miscues, while they maintained a strong presence at the plate.

DL pounded out eight hits, led by second baseman Donna Wicker's three.

The Lakers delved into the Prowler's 7-0 lead in the seventh inning by tagging five hits, including an RBI double by centerfielder Amalea Branden.

Wicker, leftfield Jalen Even and first baseman Cady Cartmell also collected one-run singles.

But two errors in the third inning by DL led to two unearned runs, while two more in the fifth led to a 5-0 deficit for the Lakers.

TRF added two more in the bottom of the sixth, which included a one-run triple by Katie Rook.

Clean-up hitter and third baseman Lacey Stennes was sited in on Butz' pitches, railing three doubles and two RBIs in the game.

"The girls are still swinging a good bat and they've been getting some good at-bats," Kirchner said. "It was just that we didn't have any timely hits early in the game.

"The pitching has been fine and the defense is playing better, too."

The Lakers will host their DL Invite Tournament Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.

The eight-team tourney has DL opening against Lake Park-Audubon; West Fargo versus Alexandria; Fargo Shanley versus Moorhead and Brainerd facing Fergus Falls.

The last rounds will be played approximately at 2 p.m.
