Lakers finish 8th overall in state
The first time is always memorable.
This past Friday, the Detroit Lakes High School Dance Team realized their goal set at the beginning of the season and participated in the Minnesota 2010 State Dance Team Tournament.
Finishing 8th in Class AA Jazz/Funk, the Laker Dance Team represented their school and community at the state meet for the first time since the introduction of the competitive section state-qualifying format.
The second afternoon session consisted of alternating performances by Class AA and AAA teams (Class A performed in an earlier session).
When it was their time to perform, the Lakers shook off any nervousness that may have been present and gave their "best performance of the year," according to head coach Ronita Hackel.
Although their eighth place position was not enough to move on to finals, their performance was in the mix, as one judge who scored them gave them as high as second among the 12 teams performing in the preliminaries.
The final results of the state meet underscored the strength of competition the Lakers had to overcome in making it out of Section 4-2A.
St. Cloud Cathedral and Sartell-St. Stephens, the two teams who finished first and second in this section, finished first and fourth, respectively, in the state tournament.
Seniors representing the Lakers on the DL Dance Team this year included: Ali Aafedt, Haylee Daggett (Captain), Cecelia Erholtz (Captain), Kristin Johnson and Sydney Sperling.
