The team-mentality focus for the Detroit Lakes boys' cross country team has added improvement to individual success, as well.

Under rainy and cool conditions, the Lakers finished fourth in their DL Rotary Invite Thursday on the Lakeview Golf Course, keyed by a pack of DL runners finishing in the top 21.

Although DL didn't have a top 10 runner, they did finish seven from 13th to 27th places.

"Over the last couple of weeks, we've been focusing on running as a team and not as individuals," said DL head boys' coach Bill Kvebak. "Our team ran more together and it showed (Thursday). They were really pushing each other through the entire race."

Senior Dylan Ramstad-Skoyles was the front engine of the Laker train after helping setting the pace in the first mile, then finishing 13th with a time of 18:09.70.

Junior Jason Stallman was close by, finishing 17th with an 18:21.16 mark.

In fact, the top five DL finishers were within 21 seconds of each other.

"We set a certain time for Dylan at the first mile so he could bring everyone with him, then he started racing after that," Kvebak said. "Each of Jason Stallman and Travis King (19th, 18:22.85) had huge meets for us."

Juniors Wesley Bakken and Brandon Olson finished on King's heels in 20-21st places, while sophomore Michael Okeson and Patrick Bakken were 26-27th as DL's sixth and seventh runners.

"We have our seventh runner within 60 seconds of our lead runner, so we definitely have good depth and it's nice to know if one guy has a bad day, another will be there to pick him up," Kvebak said.

Moorhead's Lukas Gemar ran away with the race, winning it with a time of 16:18.74, topping his teammate Glen Ellingson by 36.18.

The competition was at a high level, as well, since Ramstad-Skoyles' time of this year, would have won the meet last year.

The Spuds also took the team title, with Alexandria finishing second, Fergus Falls third and the Lakers fourth.

DL will be back in action Thursday at the Little Falls Invite, starting at 4:15 p.m.
