Although a 3-2 score appears to be close, the Detroit Lakes boys' soccer team had its road game in Crookston well under hand by dominating most of the possession for their sixth win of the season.

Bobbing above .500 for the first time this season at 6-5-1, the Lakers didn't get ahead of themselves against their section rival Crookston, a team DL handled earlier in the season.

"We controlled the ball about 90-percent of the time and we held possession well in the midfield for most of the game," said DL head coach Justin Wegleitner. "The guys did a nice job establishing possession on the field."

But the Crookston senior goalie Andy Schafer held is own in net with much pressure being applied by the Laker attackers.

The dam cracked, though, 21 minutes into the first half when junior defenseman Nate Friesen found junior midfielder Tony Carlson in the penalty area for a 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later, DL struck again on a Cody Jordan goal, assisted by Carlson for a 2-0 advantage.

Crookston answered with a penalty kick with 10 minutes remaining in the first half to slash the DL lead in half.

"We were fine with our 2-1 lead, because Crookston only had two shots on goal and we felt we controlled the first half," Wegleitner said.

But DL did add some cushion with junior forward Travis Kienitz finding the back of the net on a nice pass from senior forward Sean Colbert.

Crookston converted a rebound goal with under 10 minutes remaining in regulation, where the score would freeze at 3-2.

Sophomore Ethan VanOffelen picked up the win in the net for the Lakers, while the defense again played solid by keeping the Pirates' shots from outside the penalty area.

"We've been rotating a few defenders in with Marty Lanning and Kirby Inderrieden nursing injuries, so Christian Tigges has been seeing time on defense and has been playing very well," Wegleitner said.

The Lakers will host section opponent East Grand Forks Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

DL defeated the Green Wave 1-0 on their home turf and hope for a repeat win performance come Thursday.
