The Detroit Lakes boys' golf team is still lying in the weeds, ready to make their move, as they remain a top three team in Class 2A.

The Lakers finished a respectable fifth in the University of Minnesota's Tri-State Invite this past weekend after shooting a 327-313-640, then finished ninth in the Brainerd Invite at The Preserve Thursday.

With the Lakers' depth, now the only contributing factor that's missing is consistency, and there are several golfers ready to supply that for the May run of the schedule.

"We have played a lot of tough golf courses and the roughs have been more difficult," said DL head coach Bob Gorden. "Our top three golfers have been good, we just need a little more consistency from our last three spots."

Juniors Austin Rusness and Karter Smith have been tops in nearly every meet, while senior Tyler Baukol has been very solid, as well.

The other two seniors, Rick Hutchinson and Nate Bausman have also shown progression, as have the younger golfers including Tanner Schnathorst, Ben Mallow and Sam Goral.

"I like what I'm seeing out of our ability and I feel we can play with anyone," Gorden said. "We've just scored a little bit high at times."

The Lakers notched the second-best score Saturday at the Tri-State Invite with a 313, only bettered by eventual tournament winner Wayzata, which scored a 300.

Smith finished with a two-over par 74 Friday and a 78 Saturday to lead the Lakers with a 152.

Rusness shot an 80 and rebounded with a 75 Saturday for a 155, while Baukol finished with an 89-76-165.

Hutchinson had a good tourney with an 86-84-170 and Bausman finished with an 87-84-171.

Corey Muenzhuber of Rogers was medalist with a 71-76-147.

The Lakers had a split squad travel to Grand Rapids for a two-day tournament, as the Lakers finished third with a 327-341-668.

Sam Goral led the way for DL with a 161 and was followed by Schnathorst with a 165, Mallow at 169, Christian Hedstrom at 176 and Austin Dodd at 176.

With a month remaining on the regular season schedule, Gorden is hoping for a few golfers to step up and consistently fill the final three slots.

"We want everyone shooting in the 70's, with Austin and Karter shooting around or under par at times," Gorden said. "We should have six guys shooting in the 70's, though."

The Lakers currently hold the third-lowest average in Class 2A with a 310.75. They trail Staples-Motley's 303.5 and Byron's 304.8.

Smith is ranked No. 2 with a 73.7 average, while Rusness is eighth with a 74.85.

The Lakers will be in Park Rapids Thursday at Headwaters Golf Course, starting at 9 a.m.
