A strong defensive effort went for naught Thursday night, as the Detroit Lakes girls' hockey team lost a heartbreaker to Fargo North, 2-1 at home.

"The girls played well last night," said Laker head coach Gretchen Norby.

"We knew we needed to come out and play aggressive hockey. We have been really focusing on skating to open ice and moving the puck quickly in practice this week and I think we did a good job of that last night.

"Credit to Fargo as they had a solid goaltender in net and she didn't give up much for rebounds, but we were able to sneak one by her with Randa Larsen's goal, with Emily Seebold making a great pass to her on a 2-1."

Haliegh Wenger had some big saves for DL in just her second start of the season as goaltender.

"She showed good poise back there, with 23 saves," Norby said. "It was good to see her play well."

The defense also played well Thursday, despite Lexie Fritz being out with an injury.

"I am continually impressed with my core of young defense men of Chandra Johnson, Jamie Bollig and Emily Schiltz," Norby said. "From a coaching standpoint it's nice to be able to play three young defensemen and know they can do the job.

"They are improving each game and have been solid for us. I think as we move forward into December I am mainly looking for intensity and consistent play," the DL coach added.

"We are a young group and are encountering growing pains, but we are at a point in the season where we kind of know what we have skill wise and if we can get each player to consistently bring that level we will continue to improve."

After taking the weekend off, the Lakers will next face off against West Fargo Tuesday night, with game time set for 7:30 p.m.
