Lakers outpace Perham and PR for Mid-State swimming and diving title
Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

A first and second place finish by the two Detroit Lakes 400-yard freestyle relay teams sealed the Lakers' Mid-State Conference championship Friday in Park Rapids, but it was the top four finishes by the DL divers which keyed the title.

Led by new Mid-State Conference record holder Jon Melgaard, the Laker divers collected the top four spots for a total of 52 points, as DL went on to win the conference banner with a team score of 452 points.

Perham was second with 416 and Park Rapids third at 379.

DL won seven of the 12 events, as well, to help its championship cause.

"Although the boys that placed at the top get all the recognition in the meet, we never could have won the title if it were not for the rest of the team who scored the rest of the our points," said DL head coach Rian Heimark. "The team really came together for this meet and I am very proud of all of them."

Melgaard set the new conference meet record in diving with his score of 433.30.

Aaron Colby finished in second with a score of 311.65, while Justin George was third at 298.40 and Pat Rethwisch rounded out the top four finishes with his score of 291.25.

The 400 freestyle relay teams finished first and second.

Racing in the first-place foursome were Travis King, Cody Johnson, Melgaard and Quillan Oak, who combined for a 3:50.72 time.

The second-place team consisted of Jared Olson, Brady Otto, Mike Okeson and Carter Krengel, who finished with a 4:02.22.

Oak collected two first-place finishes on his own, including the 200 individual medley with a 2:04.09 and 100 breaststroke with a 1:02.61.

Brandon Olson also was a two-time individual victor, landing gold in the 200 freestyle with a 1:57.15 and the 100 butterfly with a 1:01.31.

The meet started off with a win for DL, as the 200 medley relay squad of King, Oak, Cody Okeson and Olson finished with a mark of 1:50.67.

Johnson helped sweep the top two spots in the 200 IM, as he finished behind Oak with a time of 2:28.28.

The Lakers will start winding up the regular season with a meet in Thief River Falls Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

DL will host the Section meet, Friday-Saturday, Feb. 26-27, inside the BTD Aquatics Center.
