Hits and runs were at a premium for the Staples-Motley softball team, thanks to Detroit Lakes senior pitcher Callea Butz, who allowed just five hits and one run in a Laker doubleheader road sweep Tuesday.

Not only was Butz putting the Cardinal batters down in order, the Laker defense also played its part by making it a rare occurrence for a S-M runner to get on base in a pair of 2-1 and 6-0 victories.

"We played good defense overall and Callea was throwing strikes," said DL head coach Phil Kirchner.

Add in some timely hits and aggressive baserunning, and the Lakers were able to improve their Mid-State Conference record to an unscathed 6-0.

Laker senior leftfielder Jalen Even slugged out both DL RBIs in a 2-1 victory in game one.

Her fielder's choice run batted in the fourth inning scored freshman right fielder Kathyrn Kinney, who singled and stole second to set herself up in scoring position.

Kinney scored the eventual winning run in the top of the sixth after she led off with a walk, stole second and came home on Even's one-out RBI single.

"We were aggressive on the basepads and the girls did a great job bunting, too," Kirchner said.

Butz did her part from the mound, pitching shutout ball up to the bottom of the seventh, where DL was hit by an error and an unearned run.

The Cardinals had the tying run on third base, but Butz was able to force two consecutive infield groundouts to end the game.

Designated hitter Amalea Branden was a one-player wrecking crew in game two, after she nearly hit for the cycle -- missing only the single.

Branden collected a double in the second inning, a triple in the fourth and a two-run homer in the seventh to finish the game 3-4, with three runs scored and two RBIs.

"Amalea had a huge day," Kirchner said. "We only had five hits (as a team), but they put the ball in play and again we had good, aggressive baserunning."

Butz allowed just two hits, while pitching the complete-game shutout.

The defense behind her was crucial, making play after play on grounders. Butz also helped herself to a total of five putouts.

The Lakers will face undefeated Park Rapids for a Mid-State showdown Friday on the Panthers' homefield, starting at 4 p.m. in a doubleheader.
