With a bitter taste lingering after failing to qualify for the State True Team meet, the Detroit Lakes girls' track and field team took out its frustrations on the Mid-State Conference squads.

What was setting up to be a close conference meet between three teams became a runaway win for the Lakers, who scored a 205.5, while Park Rapids was a distant second with a 129.5.

"Going in, I thought Park Rapids, Staples-Motley and us would be in a dogfight," said DL head girls' coach Mike Labine. "I never thought we'd win by that amount.

"It proves we belong in the State True Team."

The Lakers rode 22 personal-best records to a total of nine first-place finishes, which included three top two finishes.

After learning their lead hurdler Jess Stelter rolled an ankle during warm-ups, the coaching staff inserted junior Bre Halbur, who was nursing an ankle injury herself.

But her joint was feeling pretty good, as she won two events -- the 100 hurdles (16.67) and long jump (17-08.5).

She also was on the two relay teams which won the 4x100 and 4x200 events.

"Bre didn't even practice the hurdles because of her ankle, so that was a huge lift," Labine said of her 100-hurdle victory.

The Lakers took the top three places in the triple jump, as Kayla Lang took top honors at 34-03 and was followed by Alexis Schermer at 33-02 and Allison Berg at 32-09.75.

"All were personal best marks, too," Labine said of the triple jumpers. "After they took the top three, it just snowballed from there."

Schermer and Lang teamed up again in the high jump, taking one-two, respectively, with jumps of 5-02 and 5-0.

Rose Jackson and Lindsey Heinecke claimed the top two spots in the 200 dash, while Jen Matter won the shot put with a 34-01.

Jackson also won the 100 dash with a time of 12.84.

The Lakers will compete in their final regular season meet Tuesday, May 25 in Bemidji.
