A little patience paid off for the U-18 Detroit Lakes softball team in game one of a doubleheader against visiting Breckenridge Tuesday on the new field at Snappy Park.

The Cowgirls kept the Lakers scoreless in the first three innings to build a 1-0 lead, but DL busted out for four runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to win 5-4.

Breckenridge forced the split with a 15-8 win in the nightcap, keeping DL at .500 at 5-5.

"We had a slow start in the first game, but the girls eventually came up with four runs in the fourth," said DL head coach Phil Kirchner.

Patience was the virtue at the plate, as well, as DL batters drew two walks, while the Cowgirls' defense committed two errors.

After loading the bases with one out, an error on a dribbler down third baseline on Sadie Larson's at-bat brought in the first run, while Amanda Young also scored on the boot.

Courtney Maneval's fielder's choice to shortstop brought in Jenna Lamb, while Mikela Martin's hard-hit double to left-centerfield scored Larson for the 4-1 margin.

As it turned out, the Lakers' lone run in the fifth turned out to be the game winner, as Sasha Cook ripped a one-out double to the right field fence, with Young picking up an RBI sacrifice fly to center.

Cook cruised on the mound through the first six innings, giving up just one run in the second and six scattered hits.

But Breckenridge threatened DL's four-run lead, compiling back-to-back doubles in the seventh to close in at 5-4.

The rally ended on a Cook strikeout, her third of the game.

"Sasha threw strikes and the defense did a nice job, with only one error," Kirchner said.

Haley Baer took the loss in game two, as DL's bats were quiet as well.

The Lakers will travel to Ada-Borup Tuesday and then prepare for the league playoffs, which get underway Monday, July 20 in Hawley, starting at 9 a.m.
