Despite outscoring the Perham Yellowjackets by a combined 14-5 in Friday's doubleheader, the Detroit Lakes softball team still managed just a split in Mid-State Conference action.

DL had plenty of juice in its offense in an impressive 14-4 spanking of Perham in game one and had pitching prowess in both tilts by giving up just four hits in each game.

But Perham salvage game two behind some strong pitching of its own as the Yellowjackets rode the arm of senior pitcher Mallory Malikowski for a 1-0 victory.

"We got a lot of clutch hits from the girls in game one and Cady Cartmell pitched will with six strikeouts," said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. "We were able to hit (Malikowski) in the first game, but she got settled in well for game two and we couldn't pick up any hits."

The Lakers had plenty of offensive punch in the opener, especially from shortstop Shayna Dugger who hit a school-record two in the park homeruns to lead a hitting brigade of 11 hits.

"Shayna's two homeruns both went to the fence, so she hit them hard," Kirchner said.

Not only did DL find gaps in Perham's defense, they put the ball in play, which led to six Yellowjacket errors and 10 unearned runs.

Four different Lakers had two hits apiece in Dugger (three RBIs), Sarah Wilson, Ashley Baer and Stephanie Ianiro.

Dugger's first round-tripper came as a leadoff spark in the third inning to give DL a 3-0 lead.

Catcher Brianna Seebold continued the rally with a one-out single, which was proceeded by consecutive singles by Baer and Jenna Lamb, as all three scored on either passed balls or errors for the 6-0 advantage.

Each of Baer and Kasey Smith had RBI singles in the fifth, as the Lakers closed out the game with five runs in the top of the seventh, including Dugger's two-run shot.

Cartmell took advantage of her run support, as she stayed around the plate with six strikeouts and four walks.

Perham had one big inning, which was a four-run fifth -- which included a two-run homer by Tara Sailer.

Game two was the classic pitchers' duel as DL's Callea Butz snuffed out Perham's bats with 11 strikeouts and just four hits, while Malikowski rebounded well by shutting out the Lakers to three hits and no runs.

A leadoff triple in the fifth by Kristina Januszewski was the hit which tipped the scales of victory, as Steph Miller recorded the game's lone RBI with a single in the next at-bat.

The Lakers never really threatened Malikowski, as the Perham pitcher walked just one, struck out six and didn't allow a DL runner past second base.

On a positive note, DL had only two errors in the game, despite having several girls playing out of position due to injuries.

"Callea pitched awesome, but we just couldn't get any hits for her," Kirchner said.

The Lakers (8-8) had their game against Wadena-Deer Creek postponed Tuesday for a date later.

They will be in Thief River Falls Thursday and host Moorhead Saturday for a 1 p.m. start.
